Employee Spotlight: Blair O'Toole

By: Kaylie Gyarmathy on October 12, 2018

Blair O'Toole

Blair O'Toole has been with vXchnge since October 1st, 2012. He has worked in both the Pittsburgh and Cleveland site, but is based out of Pittsburgh. At vXchnge, Blair is an Operation Technician, which (along with his team-mates) requires him to be prepared to deal with technical support calls, emergency responses, on-going customer satisfaction, facility reliability and maintenance, site cleanliness, formal documentation and many other issues. Blair personally enjoys working with all forms of technology and engineering. Most of his free time is spent researching and experimenting. Blair said, "I am as hard-core of a nerd as they come."

Why do you enjoy working at vXchnge?

My personal hobbies and my areas of study are very closely related to my current position. It is very nice to have a job in which any of these skills can be called upon and practiced. Doing work that you truly enjoy is always preferable over the alternative.

What city in the United States would you like to live in if you had the chance?

I would actual prefer to stay here in Pittsburgh.  The weather is always something new and throughout the year can range from feeling like Siberia to the Sahara.  When viewed from the lens of working in a Data Center, our city is ideally placed from a geographical standpoint and has almost no threat from natural disasters of any kind.

What is something that is considered a luxury, but don't think you could live without?

Depending on how you look at it. (e.g. the place you live, the year(s) you are alive, etc.) Many things can be thought of as essential now that were once considered a luxury. There are still places in the world where you need to physically obtain your water for the day, boil and cleanse it for use. Do all laundry by hand. Prepare and cook every aspect of every meal and so on. Though I was not born to a rich family or have the same opportunities of those more fortunate, I try to keep the mentality of appreciation for my station in life. Not losing sight of the fact that almost anything that we take for granted nowadays really should not be.

What is a statistic of your life you would most like to see?

It would always be amusing to see the things like:

  • Cups of coffee drank
  • Hours slept
  • Time spent watching TV

However, I am pretty good at math, while pondering this question I thought of ways I could quite easily calculate the answers to all these things.
